With Easter just around the corner, now is the perfect time to learn how to make your own Easter eggs. Making Easter eggs can be a fun and creative activity, and you’ll have a tasty reward at the end of it!

To get started, you’ll need some chocolate. You can use any type of chocolate you like, but it’s important to choose a good quality chocolate, preferably with a high percentage of cocoa solids for best results. You’ll also need some egg-shaped moulds. You can find a wide variety of Easter egg moulds online like these cute mini and large Easter egg moulds from Lakeland. You will also need some items to decorate your eggs, whether that is sprinkles, melted chocolate, sweets or icing.

Here’s a step-by-step guide how to make Easter eggs:

Melt the chocolate: Break the chocolate into small pieces and place it in a heatproof bowl. Then, melt the chocolate by placing the bowl over a pot of simmering water, stirring occasionally until it’s fully melted. You can also melt chocolate in the microwave but be sure to do it in short bursts so as to prevent the chocolate from burning.

Temper the chocolate: Tempering the chocolate is an optional step, but it helps to give the eggs a shiny and smooth finish. To temper the chocolate, pour two-thirds of the melted chocolate onto a cool, clean surface (such as a marble slab or a baking sheet) and use a spatula to spread it out. Then, use a thermometer to check the temperature of the chocolate. It should be around 31-32°C for dark chocolate, or 29-30°C for milk or white chocolate. Once it’s at the right temperature, use a spatula to scrape the chocolate back into the bowl with the remaining chocolate and stir until it’s fully combined.

Fill the moulds: Use a spoon or a piping bag to fill the egg-shaped moulds with the melted chocolate. Tap the moulds gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles, then use a spatula to scrape off any excess chocolate.

Chill the eggs: Place the filled moulds in the fridge for 15-20 minutes, or until the chocolate has set. The time it takes to set the chocolate will depend on the thickness of the chocolate. Once set remove the moulds from the refrigerator and carefully remove the chocolate eggs.

Decorate the eggs: Now comes the fun part! You can decorate your Easter eggs with all sorts of toppings. Drizzle different coloured chocolate to get an abstract look, use a light layer of thin icing and dip in sprinkles, you can add sweets or use a small paintbrush to paint on designs with food colouring, or even use some edible gold leaf for a touch of luxury.

And there you have it – your very own homemade Easter eggs! They make great gifts or treats for Easter parties. Just be sure to store them in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to enjoy them. Happy Easter!
