With the last (hopefully sunny!) Bank Holiday weekend of the summer looming, our thoughts have turned to how to make the most of our last long weekend before Autumn arrives. If you are itching to get out and about this Bank Holiday, we have some fantastic suggestions of places to visit and events to enjoy, all in the local area. With the typically changeable UK weather, we’ve found events both indoors and outdoors, just in case! If you are taking a more cautious approach to crowds and are planning to stay at home, we have a few fun ideas for you too!
Grimsby
The Lincolnshire Wolds Railway
Located around 10 miles south of Grimsby, just off the A16, the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway has fun for all the family. Step back in time and take a steam train ride through the beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds, tour the engine sheds with the help of friendly guides and enjoy the history on display in the museum. Dog friendly – so ALL the family can join in the fun!
For your budding Batman or Wonder Woman, the LWR are holding a Super Hero Fun Day on Saturday 29th August. Anyone can come dressed as a Superhero and enjoy a day of fun, dancing and maybe get a chance to display their superpowers! There is also onboard entertainment from Marc at no extra cost to the usual ticket price. Prices start from £4.00 for adults (one way), £2.50 for children (one way) or £20.00 for a Family Runabout ticket (2 adults and up to 4 children). Continuing the fun on Sunday 30th August, the LWR are also holding a Dress Up and Party Day where you are invited to come dressed in any fancy dress of your choice
National Fishing Heritage Centre
Fancy something a little more educational? Learn all about the extensive and important fishing history of Grimsby at the National Fishing Heritage Centre on Alexandra Dock. Open from 10am – 4pm on Bank Holidays, visitors can explore the history of fishing in the area, visit the museum and take a guided tour of the majestic M.F.V Ross Tiger – the earliest diesel engine side trawler.
Skegness
For happy shoppers why not take a stroll around Alford Craft Market in the grounds of historic Alford Manor House and browse the stalls of handmade and unique arts and crafts. Open all Bank Holiday weekend from 10am – 5pm. A visit to the Manor House will round out the weekend – and will give shelter if the weather turns.
You can’t beat a Bank Holiday trip to the beach and with an award-winning Blue Flag beach, Skegness Beach could be just the place to go. Take a thrill ride at the Pleasure Beach, enjoy fish and chips as you sunbathe on the beach and have quality time with your loved ones paddling in the sea.
Hull
As one of the biggest (and they proclaim, the best!) aquariums in the UK, The Deep in Hull is well worth a visit, no matter the weather. Open from 9am – 6pm on a Bank Holiday, the aquarium is home to many amazing aquatic creatures such as sharks, penguins and many species of fish and other marine life.
If the sunshine gets you in the mood for a little rum and reggae, The Old School House on Malton Street in Hull are hosting a 12 hour Rum and Reggae Festival in their tropically decorated courtyard on Saturday 28th August from 3pm – 3am.
Scunthorpe
Why let rain stop play? A visit to Play Avenue on Kirkton Road is perfect on those days when the weather isn’t being kind. Open all over the Bank Holiday weekend from 9.30 – 5pm, Play Avenue is a great place to let little imaginations run wild in a role-play indoor play place. Children can have fun experiencing various job roles – doctor, actor, builder and many more.
For animal lovers, a visit to Messingham Zoo in Messingham is a must. Why not book a ‘Zoo Keeper for a Day’ or ‘Animal Photography’ experience for the Bank Holiday weekend? Shadow a keeper as they go about their afternoon daily responsibilities with the animals or enjoy a fabulous chance to photograph the animals up close.
Staying At Home
If you are not ready to visit public places or if you just can’t face the thought of the Bank Holiday tailbacks, why not make your long weekend at home a bit of an event? Host a family fancy dress competition, or how about a summer sports day complete with relay, wheelbarrow and sack races, light up the BBQ and kick back and relax or get the entire family involved with a DIY project, alternatively why not create a good old fashioned Scavenger Hunt, Good Housekeeping have some great ideas for different themed hunts.
